Oxygen Cycles is proud and glad to have presented the Southern Vets "Twin Peaks" handicap event and to have been involved in the South Australian Amy's Ride.

Well done to all of those who suppported the Amy Gillett Foundation whether you rode, 25km, 30km, 60km or 100kms, or just picked up loved ones from the finish line.

Bike SA's Annual Tour Mechanical Support

Bike SA needed someone to follow 200 cyclists from across Australia as they cruised through SA's premium wine regions, of course as soon as wine regions and bicycles were mentioned in the same sentence, we put up our collective hands and volunteered Dave and Dave for the job.

Between the two they serviced or fixed around 15 bikes a day, gave plenty of advice and even managed to raise some money for the Amy Gillett Foundation while giving everyone something to laugh about...

Magpies

Spring is sprung, the roads and trails are drying up, the sun is sometimes shining and the birds are singing in the trees. Unfortunately some of the birds are doing more than just singing, here's a handy map to keep a track on where the vicious blighters are lurking...

View Magpie Attacks in Australia, Spring 2009 in a larger map

Here at Oxygen Cycles we are hapy to donate cable ties to use as anti-magpie helmet spikes. Please use the comments section to add any useful tips you have, personally I use the "sprint like crazy" approach*.

Other note, big excitements coming up. Amy's Ride is coming to town on November 1. Register early and take advantage of our offer of 10% off Parts and Accessories and 15% off services for Amy's Ride participants. Inside Line are back in Willunga this Sunday, head down to Loud's Hill Rd if you want to see the gravity lovers turn Mt Terrible into Mt Awesome-to-the-Max. And a reminder to all veteran races to get in as many hill climbs as possible this month, the SDVLCC Oxygen Cycles Twin Peaks race is only six weeks away!

*would work better if I packed a sprint sprint like Mark Cavendish

Good Clean Fun

Isaac T ripping it up at Fox Creek, not too much luck for the 16 year old this time but he still managed an impressive fourth place in Under 19's. Three rounds in and three top five five finishes for the lad on the Kona Stab.

more results here

Monday morning saw Dave and I out scouting the route for the up coming Bicycle SA Track and Trail in Kuipto forest (June 21). The forecast is for a fun challenge. Loop One will suit almost any rider as it weaves out behind Prospect Hill and around the pines and open scrub land in the Chookarloo area. Loop 2 takes in the views across to Victor Harbour and Lake Alexandrina before diving into the forest proper where the track alternates between flowing fire racks and Adelaide MTB Club's cross-country specific mountain bike tracks. We suggest participants pack a second pair of socks, your feet will get wet.

Southerners know how to get dirty!

Southern kids show how it's done at the State Series Downhill again. In Under 19's Isaac Thomas fastest in in qualifying and in the finals Isaac came fifth and Jeffery Purves finished 8th. While in Under 17's Sullivan Fleming finished 4th and Luke Freeman a very credible 10th.

At the Bicycle SA Dirty Weekend Willunga lad Woody Pearce became the youngest solo 12hr finisher with 10 laps. While the Christies Beach Surf Club team, featuring Iron Man Heath Bastians of Maslins Beach, came 2nd in 24hr teams of four. And our very own Dave Hughes (the funny one, not the comedian) decided that 24hour solo efforts are too easy for him nowadays, so instead he stepped up as race organiser and managed to stay awake for 40+hours.

Ready, set, RACE!

It's winter and that means it's time to knock it up a notch!

Adelaide Mountain Bike Club's Winter Series cross country starts next weekend, 29 March, with a series dose of Olympic format racing at Eagle on the Hill. Followed up on the 5 April with the Inaugural Eagle on the Hill 8hr for relay teams or individuals who like a real challenge.

Inside Line get the pure adrenalin flowing on the 5 April as they kick off the State Series Down Hill in Willunga (yeah down the road and chuck a right). Head down if you've got a full face helmet, a sturdy bike, and a need for speed.

Southern Vets race regularly in the southern vales for those with a more mature nature and skinny tyres . Next week marks the start of the Eblems 4 Race Point series on the Aldinga Airport circuit.

A word from our sponsors...

Kona’s New CoilAir, Dawg And One20

- Hop On A Magic Link Bike And Fresh ’09 Backcountry And Dual-Suspension Rigs -

KONAWORLDFlying into 2009 with fast rigs that are ready for the dirt, the Kona Bike Co. has just the ride for you. The new CoilAir line of enduro/freeride bikes are back with the versatile Magic Link technology system and sweet graphics. The Dawg Series of backcountry dual-suspension bikes has been given a choice upgrade now with six-inches of front and rear travel and the new One20 trail bike platform fills the need for a light and fast XC machine with five-inches of travel.

CoilAir Supreme

G iving riders the best of both worlds when climbing and descending, the ’09 CoilAir Series of bikes is all about Magic – the Magic Link. In the never-ending struggle to find the balance between plush, active suspension and pedaling efficiency, Kona offers their revolutionary CoilAir Series of bikes, featuring the Magic Link suspension system. Refined for ’09, Kona’s focus with this series of bikes is to provide a ride that goes up as well as it goes down. The CoilAir platform features six-inches of relatively stiff, linear rear travel with steeper angles while climbing or pedaling hard. When descending, the bike automatically switches to a softer, more progressive 7.4 inches of travel with slacker angles and a lower center of gravity. It’s Magic. No levers or gizmos to tinker with; just “on-the-fly” changes as you ride. New for 09, the series features a tapered head tube for increased stiffness. Comes in three models: CoilAir Supreme, CoilAir Deluxe and CoilAir.

The Backcountry dual-suspension Dawg Series of bikes are lighter, stronger and faster than ever before. New for 09, the Dawg’s have been given an extra inch of travel – now six-inches – for a plusher, lighter, faster way through the mountains. The revamped frames feature light Scandium tubing and are stiffer in some places and more submissive in others – without compromising steering ability. If you’re looking for a rig that can take you 30 miles in a day through everything from burly to gentle terrain, then hop on a Dawg. Comes in four models: Dawg Supreme, Dawg Deluxe, Dawg and Dawgma.

One20

A new platform of bikes from Kona for 09 is the One20 Series. Featuring five-inches (120 mm) of dual-suspension travel, the One20’s are the perfect bike for those who want a plush, light rig for XC pursuits, 24-hour races and overall trail riding. Scandium tubing on the Supreme and Primo and one-piece magnesium rockers throughout the line have improved the stiffness and ride characteristics of these high performance trail bikes. Comes in four models: One20 Supreme, One20 Primo, One20 Deluxe and One20.

It's our birthday (really soon!)

YAY, just in time to have barely recovered form Christmas and New Years it's time to break open the bubbly juice while we reflect upon the joyous panic of trying to paint and outfit the shop so it would resemble some sort of bikeshop before the 2006 Tour Down Under rolled through...

Now three years and one baby later we're still here. Join us on Saturday the 24th January for a snack, a sip and a perusal of some bargains as the Pro Peleton flies by.

YAY!
